In 1972, the Jurbarkas Comprehensive Children and Youth Sports School was established in response to the growing level of sporting activity and the need to create a sports base in Jurbarkas District. The school initially offered athletics and handball. These were joined by self-defence wrestling in 1974, football in 1975, judo in 1976, and orienteering in 1988.
In 1995, the Jurbarkas District Physical Education and Sport Centre was established. Basketball was introduced in 1998, followed by rugby in 2004, Kyokushin karate in 2006, weightlifting in 2007, chess in 2014, volleyball in 2025.
At present, Jurbarkas Sport Centre provides training programmes in nine sports: football, basketball, athletics, volleyball, judo, sambo, Kyokushin karate, chess and rugby. Around 400 pupils aged 6 to 19 train at the Centre, supported by 12 coaches who are specialists and enthusiasts in their respective sports.
Jurbarkas Sport Centre successfully fulfils its main objective: to encourage self-expression among children, young people and adults through sport; to systematically develop sporting knowledge through long-term programmes; to identify talented athletes; and to prepare sportspeople through programmes developed by specialists in sports science and medicine and proven in practice, enabling them to represent Jurbarkas District Municipality in national championships and competitions, and Lithuania in international sporting events.
The Centre also seeks to expand the provision of health promotion and sporting services.
